Stereotyping and Implicit Bias in Coaching

Over the last 20 years, there has been an increasing epidemic of complaints by student-athletes directed at college coaches. The vast majority of these complaints are the result of two separate forces: gender stereotyping and gender socialization. While these student-athlete complaints harm the profession of coaching and undermine the progress of women’s sports as a whole, the group that bears the brunt of the burden these complaints cause is female coaches. Newkirk Zwagerman has identified almost 300 female coaches who have been undermined, investigated, or fired simply for coaching just like their male counterparts. The damage to these coaches is monumental, and this problem is growing rapidly. It threatens further damage to women's progress in sports and undermines the coaching profession as a whole.
